一年岁暮，又逢冬至。
冬至（Winter Solstice）是中国传统二十四节气（the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms）中的第二十二个节气，是中华民族的传统节日。
中国自从古代就对冬至十分重视，早在周朝时期，人们就会在冬至当日（当时新年的第一天）祭拜神灵。汉朝时，冬至成为了冬天的节日，朝廷会举行正式的庆祝活动，百官和庶民都会在这一天停工歇息。在唐、宋、元朝，冬至这天要进行祭神祭祖。明清时期冬至依旧兴盛，相沿至今。
冬至日，太阳几乎直射南回归线，北半球将经历一年中最短的白天和最长的黑夜。自此以后，白昼的时间变得越来越长而夜晚则会越来越短。冬至蕴藏着中国人“物极必反，否极泰来”的哲思。古人认为冬至阳气回升，是大吉之日，素有“冬至大如年”的说法。
从冬至以后，中国的绝大部分地区都会经历最寒冷的时期，我们的祖先也总是从这一天开始“数九”，记录冬至到来年春分的物候变化。
九九歌
一九二九不出手。
三九四九冰上走。
五九六九，沿河看柳。
七九河开，八九燕来。
九九加一九，耕牛遍地走。
冬至分为三候一候蚯蚓结；二候麋角解；三候水泉动。
意思是说冬至时节阳气虽已生长，但阴气还十分强盛，蚯蚓依然蜷缩着身体，静待春暖花开；麋鹿因感受阴气在逐渐减退，于是开始解角；深埋地下的泉水也因阳气回升而开始流动了。
1、吃饺子
冬至到，吃水饺。在冬至的时候，北方的大部分地区都会吃饺子，而饺子也可以称作为交子，表示新旧交替的意思。随着“冬至吃饺子”的流传，慢慢地衍生出很多寓意。比如“消寒”之意，至今民间还流传着“冬至不端饺子碗，冻掉耳朵没人管”的民谚。
2、吃汤圆
在冬至，如果说北方地区流行吃饺子，那么南方地区则更流行吃汤圆。“汤圆”是冬至必备的食品，“圆”意味着“团圆”“圆满”，冬至吃汤圆又叫“冬至圆”。民间有“吃了汤圆大一岁之说”。
3、吃馄饨
冬至还有吃馄饨的风俗，这种风俗最早流行于南宋时期。据记载，当时人们为了祭祀祖先，在冬至这一天会包馄饨吃。后来逐渐盛行开来，民间就有了“冬至馄饨夏至面”的说法。
4、吃年糕
杭州居民有冬至吃年糕的传统。过去家家户户都会在冬至到来前制作年糕来供奉先人或者馈赠亲友。现如今虽然很少有人再自制年糕了，但是依然会买来年糕庆祝冬至节气。
5、吃坚果
隆冬来临，万物运转趋于停歇。在这段时期，吃一些诸如花生、核桃、栗子等坚果类食物对身体大有好处。
6、祭祖
祭祀祖先是我国许多节日里常有的习俗活动，冬至也是其中之一。《中华全国风俗志》里，就有“冬至节，祭扫坟墓，亦名“鬼节””之说。在我们中国人的观念里，祖先的灵魂对于家族的意义，与天地诸神对于国家的力量完全可以相提并论，不可马虎，不可怠慢。
